Most design work is asked to be new. We are usually asked for something harder: to be right, and to stay right after we have gone.

That changes the method. A brand that has to hold for a decade cannot be a mood — it has to be a system with rules you can state and reasons you can argue with. A product someone uses every day cannot be pleasant on the first use and tiring on the hundredth.

So we work the way an instrument is built. We establish what has to be true, choose the smallest set of decisions that makes it true, and write down why. What we hand over is not a set of files. It is a system, its reasoning, and an honest note about the places we were unsure.

How we work. Not a process — we do not have one of those.

01 // Constraint First

We start with the constraint, not the brief. A brief describes what someone wants. A constraint describes what the work has to survive. It is usually one sentence long, and it is usually not in the brief.

02 // Purposeful Reduction

Then we reduce. Most design problems are solved by deciding what not to build — the second typeface, the third colour, the settings screen that exists because nobody could agree. We try to hand over fewer parts than we were asked for, each of them load-bearing.

03 // Tangible Measurement

We measure what can be measured, and say so plainly when it cannot be. Contrast ratios, type scales, grid geometry and frame budgets are arithmetic, not taste, and treating them as taste is how a system quietly drifts. Where a decision really is a judgement, we mark it as one.

  5. We would rather decline work than staff it thinly.
